I’ve been testing out GoPro’s Digital Hero 3 and I gotta say…it takes a little getting used to to get great shots, but after that learning period, damn it’s awesome. The camera is itty bitty, about the size of half a Clif bar mushed into a square. (sorry for that analogy, I just couldn’t think of anything better right now.)
Anyway, it’s sweet. It Velcroes onto stuff – your wrist, your handlebars, or in my case, my paddle. Plus it’s got a design feature that allows you to partially separate the camera’s waterproof housing from the strappy part, thus allowing you to quickly shoot something without actually removing it from whatever it’s attached to. Great for last minute shots of your friends from upstream as they run something in front of you.
It costs about $140 and is worth every penny, shooting both video and up to 3 megapixel stills. One suggestion though… be very still while you shoot and wipe off the housing in front of the lens beforehand.
I shot this photo yesterday (March 24) sitting in my boat in the eddy next to this drop. This is Chris Arnold running the first drop of the Slot on the Breitenbush River in Oregon.
