splash bowling

I recently got back from Costa Rica with my surf homeys, and was looking through some photos. Afternoons in sleepy surf towns require a little creativity to alleviate boredom that can set in. It’s too hot to do anything, and it’s too windy to surf. So, typically, on this trip it meant that we’d find some unassuming hotel pool and poach it. This was where one of the greatest contests known to humans was born. It’s a game with few rules but epic results. It’s called splash bowling. It’s easy. Basically, you set up empty beer cans across a pool and you run from the other side and attempt launch your body through space and time and have it land in such way that will create a tidal wave of water that knocks down the cans. Every round, the cans go farther back. Betting and Heckling is encouraged if not integral. Here’s Patrick going for a strike.

Hey, that looks like the pool at the Mal Pais Surf Camp. Is that it? I’ve been there twice and its kinda hard to forget lounging around drinking beer by the pool…

Wow, that’s a good call. Indeed, it’s Mal Pais surf camp. We weren’t staying there, but we poached the pool several times.
