Beginning June 2008, Mount Bachelor will be one of seven ski resorts that will have 100% of their grid supplied electricty offset. Powdr Corp, who owns and operates Mount Bachelor and six other ski resorts across the US, recently purchased 50 million kWh of renewable energy credits. This purchase is the second largest among the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) partners in the travel and recreation industry. Powdr Corp comes in second to Vail who purchased 52 million kWh.
Colorado-based Renewable Choice Energy will be Powdr Corp’s renewable energy provider. Renewable Choice Energy is an offset provider of Green-e certified sources such as wind, biomass and small-hydro. Besides Mount Bachelor, other ski resorts owned by Powdr Corp are Park City Mountain Resort, Killington Resort, Pico Resort, Boreal Resort, Soda Springs Resort and Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort.
This is a big move, as the EPA estimates that Powdr Corp’s purchase of RECs will help avoid over 85 million pounds of CO2 per year. So now you can hit the slopes with a good conscious.
