On Sunday, Appa Sherpa summited Mount Everest for the 18th time, breaking his own world record. It was also a good day for Min Bahadur Sherchan, who not only summited the world’s highest mountain but also became oldest person to do so. You think 76 is a ripe old age age; Sherchan was only 25 days away from his 77th birthday. The previous record was set last year by 71 year old Japanese climber Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

This weekend’s climbers took advantage of the recently lifted ban that had been imposed by the Nepalese government to allow for a protest-free path for the Chinese Olympic torch which was carried up the north side of the mountain.
