Hiking to Everest base camp is hard enough; what about doing it on a unicycle? Well, 47 year old Steve Colligan plans to do just that. The extreme unicyclist has been riding on one wheel for eight years, and specializing in “muni” (translation: mountain unicycling) for six of them. He’s even cycled the Great Wall of China.
His next adventure will take him across the Roof of the World, from Lhasa to Kathmandu. He’ll be cycling 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) across five mountain passes over 5,000 meters high and through Everest base camp on the Tibetan side. But Colligan isn’t doing the epic trip just for the record books; on his way he’s hoping to raise money for the Hilly Regional Development Club, an NGO whose aim is to develop facilities, like primary schools, in rural Nepal.
