queenFortune Magazine reports that earlier this year The Crown Estate, which manages England’s royal property on both land and sea, agreed to purchase the world’s largest wind turbine.

The 10-megawatt windmill, to be built by Clipper Windpower of Carpinteria, California, will have a wingspan that stretches the length of two soccer fields. Standing at 574 feet, the beast will generate five times the power produced by typical big turbines.

Her Majesty’s turbine, which should be ready to rock by 2012, could generate enough energy to power a large London neighborhood. The royal windmill is just the beginning of Clipper’s Britannia Project, an effort to create a fleet of “massive-megawatt” turbines on deep-sea floating platforms.
