From Volume 3 Issue 3

Think back to your childhood. Was it filled with afternoons spent climbing trees, swimming in lakes, running in parks? Spending time outdoors seems like a no-brainer –  in fact, a necessary part of growing up — but for today’s generation of children, that is not always the case. With computers, video games and text messaging, today’s youths spend less time outdoors, and it’s taking a toll.

Louv’s Last Child in the Woods links children’s obesity, attention disorders and depression to a lack of direct exposure to nature. Fortunately, Louv’s message is not one of defeat but one of hope: We can influence the way future generations interact with nature and, in turn, their physical and emotional development, but we must do so consciously. This is an engaging and informative book, not only for parents, but for everyone who plays a role in the development of a child, as well as the protection of the sanctity of nature. — AB
