Fantastic work, Heidi!

Your writing is a gift to the meager annals of cycling fanatics, especially those of cyclocross fanatics. I'm tempted to liken your ability to catch cyclocross unawares and write it down so ruthlessly to the great abilities of writers like Tim Krabbé, Paul Fournel, Major Taylor, and Graeme Fife. If you just wrote about how "great" it is and "how much fun" you had, nobody would read it. Log those suffering miles! Essay away!

I'm so glad there's a lady voice, aloud, to show that even though women can't ultimately race as fast, we try and suffer the same.

Classic Heidi Swift!
Few writers can transport the reader to the cold cloying mud, ring their ears with the screaming of a crazed giant, wet their lips with dripping snot, and make their legs and gut burn with lactic acid and whiskey. Thanks for the ride--I mean read!

Those who do not race 'cross do not get it... the emotion, the elation tied directly to the suffering, the effort that leads to self-awareness.

Why am I trying to explain? If you race 'cross, then no explanation is necessary. If you do not race, then no explanation is possible.

I ride with a fun group in the oft-frozen tundra of northern Michigan. When a fellow rider shared Heidi's blog, I joined him in fult-tilt admiration.

She writes the way it is.

Thank you!

I give Daryl's "cheering" about 75% credit for my Starcrossed finish. He's a bit scary when fired up.
