Clean Coal Carolers Cute but Evil

America’s Power is an organization that believes in Santa Clause. And by Santa Clause I mean something that is not real. And by something that is not real I mean the wonderful “green” future of clean coal.

The America’s Power campaign, which was established to spread good cheer about coal as an emerging clean energy source and America’s solution to energy independence, is (not surprisingly) funded by the coal and electricity industry via the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE).

Coal is a dirty business that wreaks havoc on the environment. It is the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel, emitting much more carbon per unit of energy than oil, and natural gas. It is one of the leading contributors to climate change.

“Clean coal” technology (CCT) refers to technologies intended to reduce pollution. But environmentalists claim that no coal-fired power plants are truly clean and that the term itself is nothing more than spin.

In The Clean Coal Myth, GreenPeace breaks down the myth of clean coal and accuses the coal industry of inventing the term as nothing more than a greenwash buzzword to clean up their dirty image.

Although watching the America’s Power interactive video of lumps of coal singing Christmas carols might be an interesting study in a desperate PR attempt, it’s hard not to be frustrated that the target market for this thing is obviously children – you know, those little people who cry a lot and tend to believe whatever imaginary creatures (like Santa and Joe the Camel) tell them.

I say there aren’t enough lumps of coal in the world to fill the stocking of the folks behind this.
