Prius the electric hybrid,
Got about fifty mpg
And whenever John Sweeney drove it
He would always save some green.
All of the other motorists
Used to laugh and call it names
They would never let John Sweeney
Merge into any passing lanes.
Then when ice storms knocked out power
John Sweeney came to say,
Prius with your electric might
Won’t you light my house tonight?
Then all the motorists loved it
And they honked their horns with glee
Prius the electric hybrid,
You’ll go down in history.
Sorry about that. I couldn’t stop myself.
After An ice storm knocked down power lines and caused a blackout in Harvard, Mass., earlier this month, local Prius owner and electrical engineer John Sweeney powered his house by hooking it up to his Toyota Prius.
As over 1,200 residents remained in the dark for more than a week Sweeney sat in relative comfort – able to run his refrigerator and freezer, wood stove fan, lights and television off the car’s battery until the power returned.
In an interview with the Boston Business Journal, Sweeney said:
“I pulled out this thing I have, an inverter, that converts the current from the car to 120 volts, which is what the appliances in your house run on,” Sweeney said in an interview. “The car ran for three days, turning itself on for a few minutes every half an hour, and it burned about five gallons of gas.”
