Offsetting your travel carbon emissions will soon be easier at the San Francisco International Airport. Maybe not as easy as buying an unhealthy snack out of a vending machine, but soon all you will have to feel eco-conscious about your trip is stand in line at the carbon offset kiosk. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, this will be the first time that an airport will offer passengers the chance to buy carbon offsets. Of course individual airlines have been selling carbon offsets for some time now, among them big names like Virgin America and Continental.
The details are still being worked out, but the airport is teaming with 3Degrees, an offset firm based in San Francisco. The airport is chipping in $163,000 to pay for the kiosks, and although prices for the offsets have yet to be determined, the SF Chronicle figures that a two-hour trip would run about $4, while offsetting a trip to Europe would be around $36.
With a specific kiosk set up just for travelers who want to purchase carbon offsets while picking up their ticket, I can only imagine a type of eco-hierarchy that will be established at SFO. Either you will diligently buy your carbon offset or you’ll be that guy. Plan accordingly.
