Thats right, you read the title correctly: now you can kill stuff guilt free! One of the major problems with killing stuff is that regardless of your feelings about shooting something, you’re also poisoning that thing with lead, the moment that bullet pierces the flesh. This can cause a host of problems for the environment and the creatures that live there. California, a leader in promoting green bullets, recently banned lead bullets in areas where the California Condor are known to live. The problem is that after you shoot something, and either leave it for dead or chop it up to take home, you’ve infected that thing with a bunch of lead fragments that are poisonous to the scavenger that eats it. What a bummer. Most gun advocacy groups oppose any sort of state or federal laws that seek to replace the lead bullet with its green, copper counterpart, due to the higher price. But here’s a question, isn’t leaving a bullet in the forest technically littering anyway? And isn’t it illegal to litter on public lands?

This is ridiculous.

I don’t get what is so ridiculous, the idea of green bullets, or the thought of hunters considering more environmentally conscious ammunition? Price is not the only issue for some hunters, copper bullets work well in some guns, but accuracy can be an issue. In some cases the copper can foul the barrel of the gun and reduce performance. I agree that bullets are a form of litter, but we also need to think about lead bird-shot, and fishing weights. Lead is not only a cheap metal, it’s also soft and heavy making it useful for many applications. Until we come up with another material with similar properties, we are going to have issues with lead. There are no easy answers.

I’m a full on environmentalist, but I think we need to choose our battles. That’s why I find this ridiculous. There are so many more pressing issues, and I’m not real interested in seeing this issue something pushed. For instance, I’d much rather us get rid of lead paint in housing projects than lead in bullets.

I find it ridiculous because of the scale of degree.
