Due to global warming causing glacial melt in the Alps, Italy and Switzerland are being forced to redraw their national border, a line that has remained unchanged since 1861, when Italy became a unified state.
The border in the Alps was originally charted along geographical points of reference such as glaciers and water courses. But now, due to glacial melt that has been accelerating since the summer of 2003, the morphology of the mountains have began to change and the border will have to change with it.
Officials of both countries are currently working to redraw their boundaries, each giving and taking land ranging in size from one to several hundred meters. No citizens will find themselves displaced during the process because the changes will occur at more than 4,000 meters above sea level – well above any human habitation.
Still don’t believe climate change is happening? Take a weekend to get out of town and head into the mountains – to places like Glacier National Park, the Alps, or anywhere else where glaciers are melting at a frightening rate.
