A college friend of mine recently tried to bike across the country, from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. in time for Obama’s inauguration. Maybe you heard it on the radio or saw it here, here or here.
Just between you and me, I didn’t think he was going to make it. I didn’t know him as a serious bicyclist in college, and to ride all the way across the country takes months of training or a long stick and a really big carrot. But he rode the whole way and got seriously good seats for the inauguration thanks to Oregon’s Earl Blumenauer.
Then there’s Keith Monteiro. I didn’t go to college with Keith, but he seems to be one of the most serious bicyclists of all time. He’s planning on riding his bike around the world (hard enough) and he says he’s going to do it in 180 days (impossible?). We figure that’s about 120 miles a day for six months.
He’s looking for sponsors, fundraising opportunities and feeding stations on his route. If you’ve got a connection with a bike company or a place to sleep, that would help him out, since it seems he’s trying to go fast and light on this trip. Follow his path and track his training on his website, where he writes with literary flair and British aplomb. He leaves in 3 days, wish him luck.
