Bamboo bikes are all the rage, and the only thing better than riding around on the trendiest of wheels is building your own. Enter Bamboo Bike Studio, founded to “harness the possibility and promise of self-propulsion.” The NYC-based company offers a weekend bamboo bike building class, with the cost of the class going to supporting the Bamboo Bike Studio’s efforts to build the first bamboo bike factory in Ghana.
It’s all part of Bamboo Bike Studio’s overall mission to “provide every cyclist the experience of building his or her dream bike from scratch, while advancing sustainable entrepreneurship and development through financing bamboo bike factories in Africa and South America.”
The weekend class — where you “walk in Saturday, ride out Sunday” — lets you pick out your own bamboo and work with experienced builders to construct your own frame. Sunday you put it all together, complete with components, and after a quick overview of basic maintenance techniques, you’re on your way, with a cool set of wheels and a good conscience.
So wishing I was in New York right now…
