Today marks the last Friday in May and our last extreme weather shot. We figured we’d go out with a bang, so we chose this photo, shot by Brian Nelson on Ross Island in Antarctica during the southern hemisphere’s springtime — August and September — after Nelson spent a year at McMurdo Research Station. “Though extremely beautiful, these clouds act as a catalyst in the destruction of ozone by chloroflourocarbons, creating the seasonal ozone hole over the Antarctic,” says Nelson.

Want your own chance at being our featured photographer? Check back on the Wend blog next week when we announce June’s Friday Photo theme! Then submit you shots to our Flickr pool, shoot an email to fphoto@wendmag.com with a description and then keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks to Mountain Hardwear for hooking this month’s winners up with either a men’s Mountain Hardwear Threshold Tee or a women’s Mountain Hardwear Conditioning Tee. We’ll be choosing our grand prize winner next week who will score a Mountain Hardwear Stimulus Jacket.
