With every issue of Wend, we partner with a non-profit in our Platform department where we donate a page in the magazine to let an activist from a like-minded environmental or humanitarian organization directly address our readers. Instead of just giving them space for a PSA ad, we ask them to write an essay about the project instead. The result is a more personal, down to earth message.
dsc_0025So, when we have an issue release party, we create a fundraiser to support that issue’s Platform partner. In the spring issue, we feature World Bicycle Relief. WBR brings bicycles to third world countries to help their people with basic transportation. So, last night, at the party we held a $10 buy in, 64 person ping pong tourney, as well as a raffle to benefit WBR. We raised a $1,000!!! Big thanks to our event sponsors who donated product for the raffle and libations to get everyone in the mood. Thanks to: Deschutes Brewing (Love the Cinder Cone), New Deal Vodka (Lime, ice, simple syrup = divine). And thanks to all the companies that donated product to the cause: Keen, Portland Design Works, Planet Bike, Nau, Lizard Lounge, Horny Toad, Timbuk2, Rickshaw Bags, Teko Socks, Kryptonite, Chris King, Nuun, Innate, Nutcase Helmets, Light & Motion, River City Bicycles, and last but not least, Cyclelogical.
dsc_0010We couldn’t have done it without you. Also MASSIVE thanks to Bob Davis and Sean McGuirk who provided the space for the party and ran the ping pong tourney. Also thanks to the Wend family who helped run the show: Heidi, Dave, Emily, Christopher, Chris, Tucker, Elsa, Staj, Erik, Ira, Caitlin, David, Meredith, Molly and Nicole. And thanks to all the PDX bike builders who came to show off their handiwork. What a fabulous evening, and what fabulous people. I LOVE THIS JOB!
