CAUTION, NUDITY, AND DISTURBING EFFIGIES!

Last week, I posted about Portland’s naked bike ride before it occurred last Saturday night. Such stunts are great for the community in my opinion, showing that humans aren’t built to live in little boxes on the hilltop. But, apparently, not everyone thinks such behavior is as funny as I do.

While reading our hometown’s music and culture newspaper, The Portland Mercury, I found a bit of footage of last Saturday’s naked ride. It was filmed by someone screaming to the riders, “Get raped you degenerate scum,” and subsequently put up on YouTube with this explanation that follows, below. Let me state something explicitly before going on, first: though I’m not a practicing Christian myself, many of family members are, and their religion resembles nothing like what you’re about to read. I think my parents — who go to church every week — if witnessing this, would say, “Ah, Portland such rich culture and wacky folks you have here. I understand why you love living here.”

From DivineFellowship on YouTube (no, I’m not making this crap up.)

“Culture vandals took to the streets tonight to express their hatred for Christian culture and the moral culture their parents believed in, and their ancestors built up carefully over many centuries. I felt impelled to preach to a mass of degenerate or misguided Whites I came upon in Portland, Oregon who were riding naked through the streets on bicycles. I’ve learned to keep a camera with me, because what I’m seeing of the collapse of Gentile culture is astounding. A silly naked man standing next to me natters to me that “our civilization is based on mutual respect.” (I don’t appreciate having to have a conversation w/a naked man. I consider his nakedness extremely disrespectful!) But our civilization is based primarily on MORALITY. And the whole point of his nakedness, and the crowd’s, was to show DISRESPECT for the moral culture around them, and they disrespected everyone in town. We have a moral culture that took aeons for their ancestors to create. At the time of this event I assumed it involved mostly heterosexuals, and found it heartbreaking. This coincided with a week of so-called “gay pride” events. Apparently this parade was organized by some perverts with the ruse that it was to ‘protest too many cars downtown.’ I don’t know how running around naked makes any point about the austerity, self-abnegation, and discipline required to renounce the automobile, so that’s basically insane. Clearly it is an excuse for some young people to have a thrill, and others to get turned on by being sexual exhibitionists, and others to mock the religious values of their grandfathers and grandmothers, and for gays to tear down moral restraints, generally.”

I guess that guy missed the whole ‘thou shalt not judge’ chapter in the Bible. And is that a touch of racism I smell with his ‘misguided Whites’ comment? Ahh well, what can be expected from someone whose family tree doesn’t branch.

dear people in response to “why you got hate so much?” The reason we hate for you to ride through our streets naked, is that it is a PUBLIC STREET, it is not your PRIVATE HOME. Do you understand that? If you want to be naked, do it in your own private home, not on public streets. If you don’t want people to hate you, wear clothes in public places. Do you understand that all? Or, were you raised like some kind of animal in the woods without civilization? Unless you were raised by wolves, and you were an orphan, you have to understand that people do not like you to strut around the streets naked. That’s it. If you want people to like you, and not hate you, then wear clothes in public. Otherwise consider yourself raised by wolves in the wild, and you belong in a zoo. There are laws about indecent exposure, and you are breaking them. If you want to ride around naked, go to San Francisco where they don’t mind. In Oregon, if you get ridden out of town on a rail, and tarred and feathered, don’t be surprised, because we don’t put up with that here..

This was another response, sent to me.

Dear editor:I am sure that you are a very reputable travel magazine. However, you must know that you are presenting yourself to the world (and you are being googled as such) as those crazy nuts who ride through city streets on bicycles, completely naked. Unfortunately, that is exactly how everybody knows you. Is that how you want yourself to be presented to the world, as supporting nude bicycle riding through towns that don’t want you doing nude bicycle riding, then that’s how your present yourself to the world — unfortunately. the people in Eugene Oregon did not want any new bicycle riders going right through their town. If you read the newspapers there, you would get that reaction; I know it’s said that the police allowed it to happen, but believe me, nobody here wanted nude bicycle riders going downtown! Or to go through that town! If that’s all you represent, in the world, or nude bicycle riders, then I’m telling this to deaf ears. Let’s put it this way; you want our opinion? We don’t want any more nude bicycle riders, riding through Eugene Oregon, whether or not the police allow them to do it. Okay? Thank you very much. Sincerely, a bunch of citizens of Eugene Oregon

Their minds would explode at the Folsom Street Fair.

BTW, Dorothy, I’ve got some crazy nuts for you to ride

  5. Ian says:

Bud Clark was a crazy nut who was known to ride naked.
I didn’t ride in or watch the naked ride this year, but from past experience less than 1 out of thousands of people watching were not stoked.
and Dorothy, i have ridden my bike naked in Eugene, and not on world naked bike ride day. Everybody cheered as i rode by, except the cop I passed. Lucky for me he couldn’t catch me crossing through campus.
Based on participation and audience and growing up here this is my guess of how people in portland feel about the ride.
5000 rode, 25000 per stoked to watch, 544,000 could care less, and 1000 are offended.

So which is worse, riding a bike naked, or driving a car wearing clothes? And how would you support your answer? (It’s SO RUDE of me even to ask the question, isn’t it? Thinking hard, brain hurt!)

On the one hand, creepy naked people, on harmless non-polluting bicycles. On the other hand, normal people driving big noisy cars that are far from harmless, that cause us to import oil from great places like Saudi Arabia (home of most of the 9/11 hijackers), and/or to convert corn to ethanol (instead of using that agricultural capacity to feed people), never mind the greenhouse gasses. Good thing Iran is a stable democracy that isn’t spending its oil money to develop nukes, isn’t it?

    Oregon Public Indecency: 163.465
    1) A person commits the crime of public indecency if while in, or in view of, a public place the person performs:
    a) an act of sexual intercourse
    b) and act of deviant sexual intercourse, or,
    c) An act of exposing the genitals of the person with the intent of arousing the sexual desire of the person or another person.
    https://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/163.465.html

Any decent person being should be disturbed and appalled at the thought of one human advocating the rape of another human, regardless of your personal views on the (legal) naked bike ride.

The gentleman who created this video sounds like he might be affiliated with the Westboro Baptist Church (aka the God Hates Fags group). The best thing to do with these folks is to ignore them. Anyone who has lived in Oregon long enough should know that we have some of the most liberal free speech protections than even the US Constitution! While I have never partook in the naked bike ride, if I did, it would be in pure jest and fun, not as an act of public indecency as stated in the OAR 163.465. The people who are creating this fuss, need to focus on more important things like the Beatitudes and go feed the hungry, heal the sick and clothe the naked (except naked bike riders!). Get a life. Quit hating.

  9. RenegadePilgrim says:

Oh, and other thing….this had nothing to do with Pride. It just happened to fall on the same weekend this year. Pride used to occur on Father’s Day weekend, but out of respect for people who want to spend the holiday with their father’s, the weekend festival was changed to the second weekend of June. It was just a coincidence that it happened during the same weekend as the Pedalpalooza activities, which included the World Naked Bike Ride.

  10. eric says:

i’m one of those people like your parents who are in church every weekend, and i think this naked bike ride is hilarious.

if i didn’t think i’d be the unlucky one to get clotheslined by a degenerate cop, i might even try this myself.

if you don’t want to see naked people, then don’t go to a naked bike ride.

    it’s that simple.
