jumbo squidFor anyone planning a trip to the deep waters of San Diego, beware. The BBC reports that jumbo Humboldt squid are showing up in large numbers in the waters right off the Californian city. Although the squid aren’t really a threat to swimmers (the animal tend to remain deeper in the water), scuba divers should keep an eye out.

One diver described how one of the rust-coloured creatures ripped the buoyancy aid and light from her chest, and grabbed her with its tentacles.

“I just kicked like crazy,” diver Shanda Magill told the Associated Press news agency.

Jumbo squid — the Humboldt can grow up to 5 feet — are nothing to mess with. “They could take a chunk of flesh off you,” says John Hyde of the National Marine Fisheries. And in our opinion, any trip where you come back with a chunk of flesh out of your leg or arm is a bad one!
