The video short for the music group Modest Mouse’s song “King Rat,” which was directed by Heath Ledger, was released today. First of all, it isn’t your ordinary “music video,” and, in fact, can hardly be categorized as such. The video itself is roughly 6 minutes long, and is an animated representation of what life would be like for us if whales hunted humans. By creating this ironic role reversal, the video paints a creepy portrait of the commercial whale hunting industry and the unnecessary damage that it does.
The video was directed by actor Heath Ledger, who unfortunately died before he was able to see his efforts put to work. But the video is likely to catch the public’s attention, and will certainly make them think. In addition, all of the proceeds from iTunes downloads will go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a group that works to stop whale hunting as well as conserve other marine life.
