Skateistan 6

Earlier this year we reported on Skateistan, a co-ed skate school in Afghanistan. After its succesful opening, the school has attracted a lot of international success, being honored for its commitment to improve the lives of children who have grown up in a chaotic political environment. The school, housed in Kabul, brings a sense of normalcy to their lives, allowing them to play and hopefully gain the skills to lead their communities toward social change and development.

One of the things that really sets Skateistan apart is that it’s co-educational; in a country where women’s rights are not a given, allowing girls to explore the possibilities of a sport is a revolutionary.

So what does Skateistan really look and feel like? We figured the best way was to show you through pictures. Check out the gallery after the jump.
