Passengers of one Japanese airline are being asked to lighten their loads like never before. In an attempt to reduce carbon emissions, All Nippon Airways (ANA) has started asking passengers to use the toilet before boarding in order to reduce carbon emissions.
The theory behind the experiment, which launched on October 1st, is grounded in elementary-school science: empty bowels and bladders mean lighter passengers, a lighter aircraft and thus lower fuel use. The airline hopes the weight saved will lead to a five-ton reduction in carbon emissions over the course of 30 days.
According to The Independent, airline staff will be present at boarding gates in terminals to ask passengers waiting to fly to relieve themselves before boarding.
Although it is intended as an experiment lasting one month and 42 flights, the trial may be extended if it is well-received by passengers and if results are positive.
