Music Monday: Wakaman

As lead vocalist for the Portland-based roots reggae group Wakaman, it wouldn’t seem out of line to say that Alfons Petrusi has one hell of a voice. But it’s not just his hearty, smooth vocals and that have the power to mesmerize an audience; it’s the combination of this musical talent with his truly genuine, significant message for world peace, education and prosperity that make people want to listen again and again.

Wakaman’s first album, titled “More Peace,” is a compilation of songs about just these things. The album itself stays close to traditional reggae beats without sounding repetitive. And the upbeat rhythms of the songs are catchy and original, with the ability to really get stuck in one’s head.

Perhaps this is just what Petrusi wants. For him, music has always been a unique and powerful vehicle for change, ever since he was a child growing up in the jungle of Suriname, where he first began listening to reggae. Now, after immigrating to Portland in 2003, Petrusi strives to change the lives of people in his home country through the tradition that he knows best – music. Fortunately for Petrusi, he’s got the message, as well as the voice, to do just that.
