There are some amazing National Parks in very remote places, and getting to them isn’t necessarily easy. The Los Angeles Times has put together a great photo gallery of America’s top 20 least visited (and crowded) parks — and it’s probably not all too shocking that 4 of the top 5 are all in Alaska. There are some other interesting places on the list — for example, did you know that there was a national park in American Samoa? The list should give us all a bit of inspiration next time we’re looking to get out but don’t want to deal with hoards of wilderness un-savvy tourists. Especially considering that the top park on the list, Kobuk Valley National Park, only had 1,250 visitors in 2009 (through August). That pretty much ensures a solitary getaway.
Here are the top five:
1. Kobuk Valley National Park, Alaska
2. National Park of American Samoa, American Samoa
3. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska
4. Katmai National Park and Reserve, Alaska
5. Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Alaska
