Climate rally planned in Portland for international day of action
October 24 rally to support US action global warming

Portland, OR–Concerned Oregonians from all over the Portland area will
join together Saturday, October 24, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Pioneer
Courthouse Square to support strong global action on climate change and
clean energy solutions to global warming.

The Oregon 350 Climate Action Rally will coincide with similar actions all
over the world the 350 movement, initiated by author Bill McKibben. Oregon
Interfaith Power & Light, a project of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and
a growing group of local businesses and nonprofits are sponsoring the
event including  Climate Solutions, Bob’s Red Mill, St. Luke Lutheran
Church, Interfaith Council of Greater Portland, Hawthorne Auto, Interstate
Roofing and The GreenVille Project.

The rally will include music, comedy, speakers and an opportunity to learn
more about how to get involved in the ongoing effort to stop global
warming. Speakers include atmospheric scientist Dr. Julie Fry, Asian
Reporter columnist Polo Catalani and Rabbi Michael Cahana of Temple Beth
Israel, Wajdi Said of Muslim Educational Trust and Paul Lumley, Executive
Director of the Columbia River Intertribal Fish Commission. Musical acts
include Takohachi, Julianne Johnson and Women’s Spirit Drum.

The 350 movement has inspired a series of grassroots actions in over 140
countries to raise awareness of the maximum safe level of carbon dioxide
in the atmosphere, which is 350 parts per million (ppm). The level of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is currently at around 387 ppm.

The US Senate is currently considering the Clean Energy Jobs and American
Power Act,which would help the US take control of our energy future and
create more clean,green jobs, while beginning to tackle the climate crisis
by reducing the levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
