My buddy Richie is tasked with announcing many of the surf contests up here in Oregon. It’s great, because he’s the perfect mix of funny jackass on the mic, and he’s also extremely erudite in modern surfing. Basically, Richie calls a spade a spade, and won’t embellish on what he sees. I got text messages all day from him, saying the surf was epic, and the biggest he’s seen for this contest yet. This year, it was a repeat victory for Santa Cruz surfers Adam Replogle and Alistair Craft. Ross Clarke-Jones of Australia and Ian Walsh of Hawaii took second. Ikaika Kalama and Kainoa Havanid of Hawaii came in third and Jeff Kafka and Travis Payne of Pacifica took fourth place. Anthony Taschnik won the paddle in contest. Whatever the controversy that hangs like a cloud over this contest, it looks like I missed some good surfing. Click photos below for larger sizes. Thanks to Richard Hallman for posting these on the web.

A buddy of mine was down there getting some pics, too. He nabbed a bit of HD video. Nothing too spectacular, but you get the flavor of the place: http://blog.jebockphotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/nelscottteaser.mov
