The travel industry is soon to see a drastic reduction in its footprint: the International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced Friday that it will approve biofuels for use on commercial flights by 2010. “For the first time, air transport has the possibility of an alternative to traditional jet fuel,” said IATA chief executive Giovanni Bisignani.
For the airline industry, using biofuels is no small matter. In fact the IATA estimates that making the change to alternative jet fuels will have a huge impact, with the possibility of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80%.
