14-Foot ‘Grinning Great White’ Shark Smiles for Camera
This toothy grin was captured in the waters off Guadalupe, Mexico by Amos Nachoum, an underwater scuba guide.
According to the Telegraph (that’s where I poached this photo), Nachoum, who guides “courageous” divers on shark-watching expeditions, was only a few feet away from this grinning great white when he snapped the photo. Unfortunately the article doesn’t mention whether or not he was in a shark cage, which makes a pretty big difference in my mind.
From the Telegraph:
Despite the proximity of a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth, Mr Nachoum insisted he was not in danger.
He said: “I have a 100 per cent safety record. These sharks aren’t the ferocious creatures we see in Jaws. The danger is in your mind.”
The danger is in your mind? Great whites aren’t that ferocious? Perhaps. But before you start feeling courageous enough to snap a photo of your own grinning great white you should probably watch this video of a gigantic great white taking a bite out of a slightly-lesser gigantic great white in Australia. I only wish that had been something out of Hollywood.
Video of shark attacking shark + footage of Australian surfing behind a shark after the jump:
Not not everybody is afraid of great whites. We know Amos Nachoum isn’t. But have you ever seen this video of a guy surfing behind a great white shark in Australia? The surfers probably faked the video somehow, but what if they didn’t?
What if indeed.
Sorry, but I’ve had sharks on the mind lately. We have a great story about shark conservation (and dynamite) in the upcoming issue of Wend that will blow your mind. I keep finding excuses to read the proof over and over…
