Dolores and Lolita, two spectacled bears in the Leipzig Zoo in Germany, have gone almost completely bald – and nobody seems to know why. And it’s a bad time to be bald in Leipzig, as the freezing German winter is just beginning to set in.

But the tragedy of this situation is slightly undermined by American pop culture because whenever the words ‘bald’ and ‘bear’ are used in the same sentence it immediately conjures up images of John Candy’s nemesis in the 1998 comedy, The Great Outdoors – one of the best movies ever.
