Transporting a stolen Christmas tree with a bicycle isn’t easy, especially if you’re drunk.

Police in Portage, Indiana made what had to have been an amusing arrest yesterday after catching Phillip Menefee trying to ride his bicycle home with a stolen Christmas tree balanced on the handle bars.

Menefee, who had been drinking, told officers he had just purchased the tree from a nearby tree farm. The $40 fir tree, which still had a price tag hanging off of it, was obviously fresh from the farm. The only problem was, the farm was closed. When officers brought this to the suspect’s attention the man allegedly changed his story, telling police he had actually bought the tree at the Sunset Lounge bar.

According to UPI, police verified that Menefee had been drinking at the bar and the business was not selling any Christmas trees.

Menefee was arrested and charged with theft and public intoxication. The tree was returned to the lot.
