The Teton Ice Park outside of Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming will be officially open for business Saturday, December 19th.
The park’s massive artificial ice waterfall, which is created by hosing the cliffs at Parking Lot Rocks with water from a 3,000-gallon tanker, is 100 feet wide and 100 feet tall. Low-flow shower heads minimize the park’s water footprint.
“I’ve learned a lot about cold-weather plumbing,” Christian Santelices, Exum Mountain Guide’s Chief Guide and Teton Ice Park project leader told Jackson Hole News and Guide. “I didn’t anticipate it would be as challenging as it’s been.”
Santelices hopes the park will help make ice climbing in the area more easily accessible. “Everything is in avalanche paths and has long hikes in,” he said. “So I thought, ‘Heck, what can we do around here.”
The Teton Ice Park is believed to be the only ice climbing park at a ski resort in the United States.
