Women Ski Jumpers Grounded for 2010 Winter Games

Last week the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed a case that, if successful, would have included Women’s ski jumping in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The outcome is the culmination of a year-and-a-half long legal battle between Canada’s female ski jumpers and the International Olympic Committee, which decides which sports will be included in the games.

The decision came as a shock to many, since the B.C. Supreme Court previously ruled that the female athletes were being discriminated against.

The Olympic Charter specifically states “Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement” as a fundamental principle of Olympism.

Ski jumping is the only activity in the Olympic Games that does not allow women to compete.
