Friday Photo: Serac Sea

January is a month of freezing weather and new beginnings. It’s the time of year when it gets so cold outside that schools shut down and frozen iguanas fall from the trees in Florida (true story). But it’s also the time when cascading waterfalls harden into walls of ice, providing a new and exciting winter challenge for climbers.

The Friday Photo theme for January is ‘ice.’

Our first winner this month is Laurel Fan for submitting the above photo, which features a sea of icy seracs on Mount Baker in Washington State. Laurel snapped the photo while doing some summer ice cragging in August 2007.

Congratulations Laurel, you win a Timbuk2 bag stuffed with a Kryptonite U-lock – the perfect gear to prepare you for bicycle commuting in 2010.

Want your own chance at winning? Submit your best ‘Ice‘ shots to our Flickr pool and then send an email describing them to fphoto@wendmag.com.
