Remote Control Avalanche Airbags

Airbags stowed in backpacks can be a life-saver for skiers or mountaineers who notice that they’ve set off an avalanche. But what happens when someone in the group unknowingly sets off a slab of ice and snow? “If skiers fail to notice in time that they’ve set off an avalanche, the airbag won’t help them,” says Bernhard Budaker from the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. That’s why researchers at this institute have developed a system for remote-control airbag activation — so that anyone in the group who sees the potential for danger can trigger the airbags for all.
