Tomorrow, I cast off from Bermuda for the Azores on the second leg of the 5gyres expedition to the north Atlantic to study marine/plastic debris. We will head southeast to Lat. 28N Long. 50W to what we believe is the epicenter of the North Atlantic Gyre, where the greatest density of garbage should collect. Here is a model that shows the hypothesized density based on drift buoy data. The numbers represent lat. and long. The red dot is where we’re going. To see what we’ve already com up with on the first leg, look through my posts on the Greenery department of Wend. Big thanks to Ron and Portia of Pangaea Explorations who outfit and run our sailing marine research vessel, The Sea Dragon. If you’re interested in sailing the seas for science or are just curious where we’ll be, click the link and you can find us from our Spot tracker map. Also thanks to Keen, Aquapac, The Surfrider Foundation, EcoUsable, Blue Turtle, and Quiksilver. Lastly, here’s a little video of the Sea Dragon underway.

    Stiv,
Be safe out there. Wish I could be along for the miles on this important mission of discovery. It has always bummed me out beyond belief to see garbage when I am 10 days out and haven’t seen another human for as long. The cruise lines need to be held accountable as well as the rest of us.
    Fair seas friend…
