Backcountry ski instructor and Wend friend Matt Bedrin wants to be the first person to climb and ski the 40 highest volcanoes of the Cascade range in one year.
He will be accompanied on various climbs along the way by friends and supporters, including his two dogs, Dylan and Marley, who are otherwise known as “the Bobs”.
Bedrin hopes that his journey, which will take him to the peaks of 40 of the highest volcanoes across the Cascades, from California to British Columbia, will raise awareness of declining snowpack throughout the Pacific Northwest.
From Bedrin’s website, Skiing Cascadia:
Most climate models show sharp declines in spring snowpack in the Pacific Northwest over the next 40 or so years. Although there may still be skiing, ski descents, including those that make Skiing Cascadia possible, may become jeopardized. Loss of snowpack and glacial retreat are likely to have severe impacts on people, fish, and wildlife in the Pacific Northwest. Protecting and sharing the continual snowpack is vital to the heart of Skiing Cascadia.
This incredible video, shot and edited by the visionary bad-asses at Uncage the Soul Productions (the same folks who bring you the Photo of the Year contest, which benefits the MESD Outdoor School and is arguably the best outdoors photo contest in the region) shows Bedrin and his team climbing and skiing the first of many volcanoes: Mount St. Helens.
