A 22 year-old woman coming from Juarez, Mexico was arrested on Wednesday after telling federal patrol officers that she had nothing except three framed pictures of Jesus to declare. Turns out, those pictures were worth a lot more than your average religious paraphernalia, considering there was 30 pounds of marijuana stashed inside.
According to William Molaski, port director of the agency’s office in El Paso, Texas, this practice — which could be deemed sacrilegious to some — is becoming less uncommon.
“This is not the first time we have seen smugglers attempt to use religious figures and articles of faith to further their criminal enterprise…This would include using religious symbols, children and senior citizens in their attempts to defeat the CBP inspection process.”
