A stranded climber is blowing a rescue whistle from within the crater of St. Helens after becoming trapped in the 8,365′ mountain earlier this afternoon.
Skamania County authorities received a call from the climber around 1:oo p.m. on Monday and the the stranded man was spotted by helicopter shortly thereafter, but strong winds and poor visibility prevented rescue.
The climbers condition is unknown and whether he’ll be recovered today is unknown. A local Coast Guard helicopter has been contacted and a ground rescue team is being organized. Because his location is known, rescue efforts should be successful once conditions clear.
Let’s hope the climbers’ condition is stable enough to survive the night and a weather window opens up at sunrise.
