Rescuers found the body of 52-year-old Joseph Bohlig today, who fell 1,500 feet into the Mount St. Helens caldera yesterday. Two rescue attempts were made on Monday afternoon, but were unsuccessful due to high winds and little sunlight.
Bohlig, who had climbed Mount St. Helens 68 times, was no stranger to the dormant volcano. He fell while posing for a celebratory picture when a snow overhang gave way.
His body was removed by naval helicopters this afternoon after being found partially covered in snow.
Our thoughts go out to Bohlig’s family and friends in this difficult time.
