When it comes to walking the walk, pro-snowboarder Jonaven Moore is determined to do just that with every step he takes in knee-deep powder… And he’s taking some major steps. The Season, a cool new web television project, follows Jonaven and four other athletes through the course of a single season in the Pacific Northwest.

A pro-snowboarder since the age of 10 and known for balancing his time in big mountain terrain with competitive freestyle, Jonaven has had the chance to follow his sport on a global level. But became frustrated with the filming industry’s reliance on helicopters and snowmobiles and lip service to protecting the environment.

From The Season:

Jonaven Moore went against his better instincts to get a shot for a film part and it nearly took his best friend’s life. Faced with the implications of his decision to poach a wilderness area via helicopter, Jonaven stepped back from professional snowboarding and decided to make a change.

Jonaven has come back with a new approach to his riding — he is hiking up every line he’s snowboarding this year. “I’m not sure if what Jonaven’s doing is going to save the world, but he sure seems a whole lot more at peace with how he is existing as an athlete,” said Fitz Cahall, The Season creator and leading man of the Dirtbag Diaries. This episode also features The Conservation Alliance, a group of outdoor businesses giving back to the outdoors.

The decision to shrug off heli and snowmobile-assisted rides cost Jonaven many of his old relationships with sponsors, but ultimately it worked and he connected with companies that saw the value in his approach to adventure and riding, including Arc’teryx and Jones Snowboards.

Along with being featured in The Season, Jonaven is also one of the main athletes in this fall’s Deeper Project from Teton Gravity Research snowboard athlete and founder of Jones Snowboards, Jeremy Jones. Deeper is a new big mountain snowboard film featuring Jones, Jonaven and a handpicked group of elite riders, who set out to conquer the best lines without the limited assistance of snowmobiles, helicopters or lifts.

“I wanted to get back to solitude, adventure, and new descents,” Jones said. “By hiking past boundaries set in place by helis and snowmobiles we were able to get into bigger mountains, away from people and back to first descents.

From the Jones Snowboards team page, Moore said:

For the upcoming 2010 winter I’ll be focusing almost all of my time on snow to filming for the Deeper project. It’s really exciting to work towards opening peoples minds to what can be done on a snowboard, without all the bells and whistles of big budgets, helis and sleds. The average shredder can relate to these adventures on a budget. Hopefully, this footage will show just how accessible it all really is.
