In a new spin on the popular California high-speed chase story, Los Angeles bike messengers pursued a suspected bike thief for multiple blocks through busy downtown streets in order to retrieve a stolen bicycle.
When several bike couriers witnessed a man stealing a mountain bike early Tuesday they decided it would be prudent (and probably fun) to take the law into their own hands and dish out a little street justice.
According to police, the bike messengers then pursued the bandit for five blocks through busy downtown streets before finally tackling him off his bike in what sounds like a rodeo-style move worthy of the Pendleton Roundup. Reports state that the suspected thief was “grabbed by the back of the shirt and pulled to the ground,” where he possibly suffered a sprained ankle and road rash. Yee hawr.
The bicycle messengers retrieved the $500 mountain bike and then, in true street justice style, allowed the battered thief to run away with the knowledge that he probably would have fared much worse had he been grabbed by LAPD.
