A photograph of an incredibly rare all-black penguin has been making the rounds on media outlets over the course of the last few weeks, thanks to Andrew Evans, contributing editor for National Geographic. Evans was able to get the fantastic shot after traveling 10,000 miles from Washington D.C. to Antarctica, primarily by public city buses.

Evans’ 10-week Bus2Antarctica expedition began in January, when he hopped on a city bus in Washington D.C. and proceeded to take 44 other buses before boarding the National Geographic Explorer, the latest addition to the Lindblad fleet, at the southern tip of South America.

In addition to snapping a photo of what is probably the world’s only entirely melanistic penguins, Evans dutifully recorded the events of his trip — including the time he almost died on one of the bus rides — on the National Geographic Intelligent Travel blog.

Now that he’s back in Washington D.C. at National Geographic HQ, Evans will be joining Explorations: the Lindblad Expeditions Blog for a free webinar on Antarctica on Wednesday, March 31 at 8 p.m. EST.
