Roughly 103 acres of mining claims near Telluride Ski Resort has become off-limits to backcountry skiers and hikers. after Tom Chapman of Gold Hill Development Co. bought the land.
Claiming a liability issue, Tom Chapman of Gold Hill Development Co.—who recently purchased the chunk of land—closed the area, which is close to where Telluride recently began conducting guided trips into the Bear Creek drainage.
The practice of purchasing isolated parcels of land within national parks and other federal property is not new for developers, whom are often able to make some serious bank from selling them.
Chapman is currently building a home inside the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
