Trekking across the North Pole is a dream for adventurers around the world, and many people have experienced it first hand (and lived to tell the tale). But soon, Elham Al-Qasimi will become the first Arab woman to ever set foot in the North Pole. Of course, Al-Qasimi doesn’t just plan to visit the North Pole. She plans to attempt a human-powered expedition, which she will complete alone, largely by cross country ski.
According to Emirates news agency (WAM), Al-Qasimi will not only become the first Arab woman to travel to the North Pole, she will also become the first United Arab Emirates (UAE) national to undertake an unsupported expedition to the North Pole.
Al-Qasimi’s expedition, which began Tuesday, April 13, will take her across the final degree of latitude, starting at 89 degrees. The trip is planned to take two weeks.
