Shrimp Boat Carries Kayakers Into New Territory

One Georgia shrimp boat is making waves in the world of kayaking by ferrying kayakers to remote places that they might not be able to reach by paddle power alone. The boat itself, Captain Gabby, was retrofitted to carry kayaks, to house kayakers on board, and was completely gutted of its shrimp boat past. “We had to clean and remove years of commercial shrimping from the boat. We probably filled up a couple of Dumpsters,” said ship captain Patrick Hagan, who led the retrofitting project. “It took way more time than we anticipated.”

Cindy Dennar who is the co-owner of Captain Gabby; a kayak guide; and a partner in the kayak tour company Southeast Adventure Outfitters worked with fellow kayak guides Charlie Young and Robby Bufkin, to create a system for kayakers to reach far off destinations via a “Mother Ship ” of sorts, in order to bring kayakers to the most remote areas for exploration.

“It’s really unique. There’s definitely nothing else like it in the world,” said Hagan. “Maybe it will help more people realize how much you can do with an old shrimp boat… It will give everyone time to sit, relax, unwind and immerse themselves in the surroundings,” he said.
