Priests aren’t exactly known to represent the bike community, but that doesn’t mean they don’t hit the pavement on two wheels once in a while. Jesuit priest Matt Ruhl, who leads St. Xavier Church in Kansas City, Missouri, is about to embark on a 5,000-mile ride in order to raise awareness for poverty-related issues. He, along with 12 other riders, will take off from Cape Flattery, Washington this Memorial Day (May 31), and will finish in Key West, Florida on Labor Day (September 6). Ruhl’s journey by bike will take him through various stops, including an Indian Reservation, a prison and a recovering area of New Orleans. The focus of the trip is to highlight poverty problems and to raise money for programs that benefit the poor. Of course, Ruhl will also celebrate Mass along the way.
