The race between climbers Edurne Pasaban and Oh Eun-sun to become the first woman to conquer the 14 highest peaks in the world is nearing a close.
Spanish climber Pasaban, 36, summited the 8,091 meter Annapurna on Saturday, which means she only has one more peak to conquer. According to the BBC, she will travel to Tibet soon in order to begin scaling the 8,027m Shisha Pangma.
Her rival, 44-year-old Eun-sun, is also on the slopes of Annapurna—her final challenge. Currently acclimatizing at Base Camp Two, she plans to attempt the summit on Saturday.
While Eun-sun appears to be at the advantage, she faces one of the—if not the—most dangerous peaks of her career. Annapurna is both technically difficult and avalanche-prone, with a death rate surpassing that of Everest.
The first man to climb all 14 peaks higher than 8,000m was Italy’s Reinhold Messner in 1986.
