Will Helmet Laws Soon Hit the Slopes?

Skiing and snowboarding can be dangerous… We know. But are these activities so unsafe that they require legal regulation to keep youngsters from getting injured? Democratic Assemblyman Dave Jones certainly thinks so. He’s the author of an Assembly committee approved bill that would require minors and ski resort employees to wear helmets at all times, or have their lift tickets revoked. Jones’ bill also proposes that resorts publish reports detailing how many people are injured and killed each year as a result of ski and snowboard accidents.

As strange as the bill may sound, Jones isn’t the only one proposing such a law; the Democratic state senator from San Francisco, Leland Yee, also proposed a ski helmet bill, which won senate committee approval last week. Yee’s bill would institute $25 dollar fines to parents whose kids failed to sport a helmet on the slopes.

I always wear a helmet on the slopes. I hit my head once back in 2004 and I’ve been terrified to ride without a helmet ever since. Wear your brain bucket kids!
