13-year-old Jordan Romero wants to become the youngest person in the world to summit Mount Everest. So, accompanied by his dad and his dad’s girlfriend, he’s started making the climb. Although Romero has climbed five of the Seven Summits, he’s aware that Everest is an entirely different beast… One that requires 4,400 pounds of gear, carried by a fleet of sherpas and yaks who will follow the group of three during their ascent of the mountain.

Romero is thrilled to be pursuing his dream, and seems to be taking in the scenery, along with all the challenges, of the climb. “I’ve been able to see Mount Everest from wherever I go. I’m already happy with that.” He said, adding, “It’s Mount Everest. It’s a tough mountain. The altitude is tough… It’s both physically and technically hard. There’s a lot of new things.”

For now, Romero is just happy to be on the mountain itself, and isn’t too worried about reaching any specifics heights too soon. “It could take… a couple of weeks or a couple of years,” he says.
