Surfin’ ‘Round the World

Regardless of the Beach Boys’ classic song about “surfin’ in the U.S.A.,” catching a wave happens beyond the American border. From the white sandy beaches of Hawaii to sand dunes in Thailand to icy lakes in Norway, surfing is definitely an international sport.

Maybe you’re a fan of paddling out to conquer a wave (on your eco-friendly board of course), or you could be more of the wind-surfing type. Perhaps you just like to sit there and float, or instead of the ocean, you’ve got the sand dunes in your backyard.

Whether you spend your free time catching waves, dunes or wind, prepare to take a visual journey of Surfin’, ‘Round the World.

If you like our ‘Round the World series, you might enjoy some of the previous themes: doorwayshatsboatinggas stationsbicycles, windows, truckin’, glasses, mohawks, beerauthorities, fanny packs, Jesus, swimming, sweaters, mustaches, stairs, chess, foods, silhouettes, donkeys, outhouses, and cemeteries.

Ever see “The Endless Summer” classic surf movie? The perfect wave was found at Cape ST Francis and you do not even have South Africa on the list. It is the mecca of surf locations.

The Flickr creative commons doesn’t always have the best selection. Sorry Ian.

Cape St. Francis is wildly random when it comes to kif waves thanks to offshore winds and shifting bottom. Still very nice when it is working though. Creative license taken by Bruce Brown meant that it was always going to be tough to live up to the hype!
